Accotink Creek runs through one of the finest wildlife corridors in Fairfax County. It passes through Eakin, Wakefield, Lake Accotink, and Accotink Stream Valley Parks, Ft. Belvoir, and the Accotink Bay Wildlife Refuge, then drains into the Potomac River, affecting the waters of Chesapeake Bay.
We are committed to protecting, promoting, and restoring the water quality, natural habitat, and ecological well-being of the Accotink Creek watershed.

The overall goal of watershed planning is to serve as a tool to identify and address causes of degradation and to ensure future protection for Fairfax County water resources. There are many new technologies and creative planning tools that can be applied to protect, mitigate, and restore watersheds. Some may be “too creative” and amount to meddling, causing unintended negative consequences. Particularly to be avoided is diverting energy to budget-building, feel-good busywork.
Our streams are drowning!
We are drowning Accotink Creek with inadequate water management. One of the major problems impairing the health of our streams is, ironically, water itself – a case of too much of a good thing.

Anywhere we influence land use decisions – our homes, civic associations, houses of worship, and more – we can make a difference for Accotink Creek. The answer lies in allowing the land to work with nature – to slow down water, filter it, and allow it to seep into aquifers and streams gradually. Rain gardens, rain barrels, green roofs, pervious paving and other simple techniques can help us enhance our properties while maintaining a healthy Accotink Creek.
